What has happened here in .... is that a hardcore of church officials are determined to have the money at all costs - despite all protests, demonstrations, the outrage of the junior school next door and even a vote of no confidence signed by 1,200 people given wide coverage in the local paper. Ordinary church-goers, once their opposition becomes known, are basically just ostracised and nobody cares whether they cease to attend or not. PCC members who may have had doubts about the idea have simply been replaced. I have not been to church since Easter Sunday last year when, during a point in the service when one is supposed to turn to one's neighbour and wish them well, a member of the PCC sitting near me would only shake my hand while staring fixedly in the opposite direction and rolling her eyes. I have been blanked in the street by people I thought were my friends. This is the real problem for the church of England.. |
